Miller made his 10th birthday extra special by GIVING it to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer!

Every year around the middle of March, I start asking my son what he would like to do to celebrate his birthday in April. His answers typically consist of things such as laser tag, bowling or another similar out-of-the-house event. Really, whatever option has the potential for providing the most birthday loot is his likely choice.

This year, however, his birthday coincided with our annual neighborhood yard sale and his answer to my question was surprisingly different.

Miller Kunz thumbHe said, “How about if I have a bake sale and raise money for kids with cancer?”

He went on to explain, “If the yard sale is the same day as my birthday AND we have a bake sale, there will be tons of people who will want to buy cookies.”  He added, “I can invite my friends to help and if they can’t come, they can bake cookies.” Miller is not one who likes to draw attention to himself, but he does love attention. So hosting a bake sale on a day that there would be lots of foot traffic in front of our home would suit him well! He could promote his event through e-mail, Facebook and flyers at school.

Having participated in several Cookies for Kids’ Cancer events before, I knew a bake sale would be the perfect fit for my 10-year-old’s first fundraising venture. With the help of some neighborhood friends, we made signs and banners and promoted the event for a couple of weeks. We distributed flyers at school, created a fundraising page to solicit cookie donations, and promoted the bake sale via Facebook and e-mail. By the morning of the bake sale, we had a garage full of cookies and other baked goodies.

We were blessed with beautiful weather for the big day and had a steady flow of customers. So many people helped us by baking cookies, and out of town friends and family were able to participate by donating to the personal fundraising page we set up. Miller’s friends and family raised $900 for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer in honor of his 10th birthday!

His event was a huge success and he learned an important life lesson: it feels so good to give your time and energy to a worthy cause….even on your own birthday.

Let Miller’s sweet idea inspire you to GIVE your birthday to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer this year! It’s a simple, fun way to make a big difference. For tons of helpful bake sale tips and inspiration, click here. Be sure to take a peek at other ways to #BeaGoodCookie!
