The Calabasas High Cookies for Kids' Cancer Club

Baking and sharing good cookies may be our passion, but featuring Good Cookies is our new favorite blog topic. Read about the inspiration behind our first Good Cookies of the Week – the students of Calabasas High School’s Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Club. A special thank you to Debbie Polakov for being our guest blogger – read how her inspiration to host a bake sale turned into a community-wide passion.

We are Glad to Give. . .

I know a flu shot may help prevent the flu, but I never thought getting a flu shot would inspire me to host a bake sale that could save lives. Let me explain.

I was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting to get a flu shot when I came across a magazine article about a mom whose two year old son was diagnosed with childhood cancer.  The mom, Gretchen Holt Witt, decided to fight back for her son Liam and for all kids fighting cancer and started a charity to help raise money for childhood cancer research through bake sales.  The article explained that during the holiday season the Glad Products Company would be matching funds raised at bake sales. At that moment I realized that a Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sale was something I could and wanted to do with my family.

My kids were excited about the idea. They passed out letters and sent emails to their friends to help.  My husband and I rallied our friends and family to bake cookies.  We had no idea what to expect at that 1st bake sale, but we were overwhelmed with the amount of generosity and support from our community. Weeks later, people kept asking us when our next bake sale was and how they could help. That’s when my son had the idea of starting a club at his high school called the Calabasas High School Cookies For Kids’ Cancer Club. After the 1st club rush he had a list of over 100 students that wanted to join the club!  So far they’ve held two bake sales and raised thousands of dollars, and their third bake sale is scheduled for May when Glad is matching every dollar raised up to $225,000 to honor the life and memory of Gretchen’s son Liam who recently lost his courageous battle against cancer at the age of 6.

I’m so proud of all the students and the work they do for this charity. As Gretchen’s story inspired me, these students inspire others to rise to their potential.  Children helping children can make a difference.

Host an event this May to honor what would have been Liam Witt’s 7th Birthday and to help us reach the full $225,000 match from our friends at the Glad Products Company. Click here to register.
